Turmeric curcumin is derived from the root of Curcuma longa (turmeric or yellow ginger), which is mainly known in Europe as a spice. The major challenge for the use of curcumin is ist very low natural bioavailability. Natural turmeric powder as used as spice, can only be absorbed to a very limited extent, since turmeric is extremely poorly soluble in water.


Since our body, blood and cells consist of large amounts of water, fat-soluble substances, such as curcumin or ß-carotene, are absorbed poorly and in very small quantities. Therefore, curcumine would have to be consumed in very large quantities in order to have any chance to benefit from the positive effetcs at all.

Mechanism of uptake in the body

CAVACURMIN® is transported through the stomach into the small intestine. From there, the curcumin molecules enter the blood stream via epithelial cells of the small intestine and can be transported through the blood vessels throughout the body. The enzyme amylase cleaves (hydrolyzes) the oligosaccharide gamma-cyclodextrin, which acts as matrix for uptake, first to maltose and maltotriose, and converts then to glucose. With CAVACURMIN®, the body can absorb up to 40 times the amount of curcumin compared to other sources.
A CAVACURMIN® bioavailability study, performed at the University of Sydney, Australia, compared the curcumin intake with pure turmeric and other curcumin-containing supplements and provided extensive analytical data demonstrating the exceptionally high levels of nutrient uptake. The results of this study have been published in an international journal for nutrition (European Journal of Nutrition) *.
